Additional facts and information related to biogas, anaerobic digestion and renewable energy.
“Harvesting Clean Energy on Ontario Farms” presents a comparison of clean energy policies and incentives between Germany and Ontario and offers suggestions for further research and action to help Canadian farmers embrace renewable energy, including biogas. The report was written in collaboration with the Pembina Institute, Heinrich Boell Foundation, the United Church of Canada and Climate Action Network Canada.
OMAFRA's Biogas (Anaerobic Digestion) website is an excellent source of information on biogas (anaerobic digestion) technology and the biogas sector in Ontario.
- Factsheet: Anaerobic Digestion Basics provides basic information on anaerobic digestion and different types of anaerobic digestion system configurations suitable for agri-food systems in Canada. The Factsheet also outlines some of the factors involved in deciding whether to add an anaerobic digester to a farming or food processing operation.
- Factsheet: Biogas Incentives and Requirements: Building a Farm-Based Biogas System in Ontario presents some key opportunities and issues to consider by farmers who are looking at ways to finance and build AD systems.
- Infosheet: Energy Yields from a Farm-Based Anaerobic Digestion System provides basic information required to calculate the type, amount and economic value of energy that could be expected to be produced from a farm-based anaerobic digestion system. It also provides an example of an energy balance for a digester.
- Factsheet: Feed-In Tariff, Green Energy Act and Regulated Mixed Anaerobic Digestion Facility Rules outlines the new and improved opportunities for biogas systems, summarizing the basic components and details of the programs, policies, and regulations.
Also, ManureNet, a website for bioenergy and manure management information, provides links to a variety of resources with background information on manure digesters as well as issues related to on-farm anaerobic digestion.
Anaerobic Digestion framework document published, U.K. U.K. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) – December 1, 2010
The U.K. Government published a guideline which details steps, which may be needed to increase energy from waste in England through AD. The document is an invitation to contribute on the strategy. We recommend you to read the document to gain a greater understanding of the policies, forecasts and strategies which are in place in England.

OMAFRA has provided a list of contacts in the biogas sector dealing with anaerobic digestion ranging from developers, consultants, government and research groups, technology providers, laboratories and advocacy organizations. http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/engineer/facts/ad_contact.htm#5
The Ontario Power Authority has posted a guideline document clarifying their position on Future Contract Related Products (FRCP)
The Ontario Power Authority has posted an updated timeline for the FIT program's Transmission Availability Test (TAT) and the Distribution Availability Test (DAT). Information has also been posted about applications and application review regarding Capacity Allocation Exempt (CAE) projects. The information can be assessed at the following link: The Ontario Power Authority
The Renewable Energy Facilitation Office (REFO) is a one-window access point to assist renewable energy project developers to obtain information about bringing renewable energy projects to life. In the event that you have not already accessed our services, we would invite you to call us at any time if you have any questions about the FIT program, the regulatory process for FIT projects, or the electricity system.
FarmEnergyonline.com portal is a source of information on biogas technology and the economics of biogas production. The website also provides a Budget Template for Typical Anaerobic System that lists typical items to consider when creating the budget. The site also offers basic introduction to creating an Anaerobic Digestive Systems Business Plan and Self Assessment Tools.
Integration of Renewable Energy Farms (ReF) The IReF website was designed as a “first point of contact” for farmers and agri-food producers interested in renewable energy solutions. It is a centralized source of information on renewable energy technologies, including anaerobic digestion, finance, environmental issues, education and training and government initiatives and resources.
